Aging well is different for everyone, which is why understanding your priorities and planning ahead can be important. At Friends House, we’re creating more opportunities for residents to live and age well on their terms. That philosophy is at the heart of our proposed North Forest Addition—a thoughtful expansion rooted in the Quaker-inspired values and strong sense of community that have long shaped life at Friends House. Here are five ways our expansion is being designed with aging well in mind and how you can be part of it too.
1) A Place Where You Can Socialize and Belong
Plans for the North Forest Addition include welcoming spaces for coffee, conversation, and activities, giving residents more opportunities to meet new people, spend time with loved ones, and simply enjoy community life. Connected to the existing Friends House campus, the addition makes it easy for new residents to feel part of the larger community right from the start, with many activities, programs, and resident-run clubs to enjoy, including the gardening committee, mindfulness programs, ArtSpace exhibits, and more.
2) More Ways to Move and Stay Healthy
At Friends House, getting outside and staying active is a natural part of everyday life. Walking paths wind through 62 acres of trees and greenery, making it easy to enjoy a morning walk, take in the seasons, or stop and chat with a neighbor along the way.
These everyday moments bring people together and reflect the Quaker-inspired values of connection, community, and care for one another. Here, you can stay active in ways that feel right for you, at your own pace.
3) Accessible Homes Designed for the Years Ahead
Aging well includes having a home that continues to feel comfortable and functional as life changes. The homes in our expansion will feature bright, spacious, open-concept apartments with modern amenities designed around how older adults live today.
As a Life Plan Community, we offer the reassurance of having access to additional levels of care if your needs change over time. Maintenance is included in the monthly fee, in accordance with the terms of the residence and services agreement, and residents also have access to the amenities of the existing Friends House campus. Together, these benefits are designed to offer a place where you can feel at home for years to come.
4) Surround Yourself with Nature
Having nature woven into everyday life creates more opportunities to slow down, spend time outdoors, and enjoy your surroundings. The proposed North Forest Addition is designed to fit within a wooded area of the existing campus.
Many residences will include balconies with natural and scenic views. Residents will be able to enjoy nature as part of everyday life—whether that means sitting outside, watching wildlife, or simply enjoying the fresh air.

5) Embrace Sustainable Living
We believe a community designed for the future should also consider the future of the environment. Plans for the North Forest Addition use LEED for Homes as a guide and are designed to exceed Montgomery County’s energy conservation requirements. Proposed features include R45 room insulation, high-efficiency lighting, and appliances, as well as sustainable materials. Together, these additions create efficient, comfortable homes while supporting Friends House’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
